Samantha Fish – Black Wind Howlin (2013) [Blues, HighResAudio, FLAC 48kHz/24bit]

Artist: Samantha Fish
Title: Black Wind Howlin
Genre: Blues
Release Date: 2013
Label: Ruf Records
Duration: 54:09
Quality: FLAC 48kHz/24bit
Source: HighResAudio

Released in September 2013 through Ruf Records, Black Wind Howlin' flips a finger at the clich of the 'difficult second album', firing off 12 classic tracks that chart Samantha's evolution as songwriter, gunslinger and lyricist. Her debut album was hailed as a thrilling opening gambit, earning a string of rave reviews and accolades, of which the Blues Music Award (BMA) for 'Best New Artist Debut' in 2012 was perhaps the most auspicious.

While lesser artists work to a template or settle into a pigeonhole, Samantha shifts her shape across the Black Wind Howlin' tracklisting. She can be brutally rocking on cuts like the tour bus snapshot of Miles To Go ("Twelve hours to Reno/ten hours til the next show"), the swaggering Sucker Born ("Vegas left me weary, LA bled me dry/skating on fumes as I crossed the Nevada line...") and the venomous Go To Hell ("Oh, this ain't my first rodeo/You hit yourself a dead end/Your voodoo eyes, ain't gonna cast a spell/So you can go to hell!"). "I've become tougher," she notes of these head-banging moments, "and I think that was reflected in the sound we went for."

And yet, elsewhere, backed by the versatile production of Royal Southern Brotherhood guitarist and longtime collaborator Mike Zito, you'll find Samantha shifting gears to the aching slide-guitar balladry of Over You ("Echoing words, said I'd never make it on my own...") and the redemptive country strum Last September ("Don't remember the curves of my face/Can't feel the warmth in my embrace/Well I'm here to remind you..."). She might stop off for a gritty cover of Howlin' Wolf's Who's Been Talkin', and co-wrote Go To Hell with Zito, but all other tracks are Samantha's self-penned originals, and it's a mix to keep listeners on their toes. "I wanted this record to have a modern rocking sound," she explains of the light-footed vibe. "I also wanted it to have elements of Americana, country and roots."

The sessions proved just as rewarding as the writing. As a seasoned road warrior who will spend much of 2013 burning tarmac, recording at Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana was a rare chance for Samantha to put down roots, flanked by a first-call band that included Royal Southern Brotherhood rhythm section Yonrico Scott (drums) and Charlie Wooton (bass), back-up guitar and vocals from Zito, plus guest appearances from Johnny Sansone (harmonica), Bo Thomas (fiddle on Last September) and Paul Thorn (vocals on Go To Hell). "I had a dream team of musicians and special guests," she recalls. "And Dockside Studios quickly became one of my favourite places on earth."

But it was another venue, some years earlier, that set Samantha on her musical path. The songwriter recalls her first musical taste as the classic rock of The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty, alongside contemporary artists like Sheryl Crow and The Black Crowes, but after several underage clandestine visits to the Knuckleheads Saloon blues club in her native Kansas City, she followed the thread from modern masters like Zito and Tab Benoit, through fallen '80s heroes like Stevie Ray Vaughan, right back to the pre-war Delta masters. "I fell in love with it," she told Premier Guitar of her growing passion for the form, "and started doing my homework by listening to the old guys like Son House and Skip James."

Soon enough, appreciation for the blues had spilled over into application, and by the age of 18, Samantha had settled on a searing lead guitar style that expressed her own voice rather than mimicking the clichd blues licks note-for-note. Home practice didn't scratch the itch, and she broke into a dues-paying period on the Kansas City jam circuit: an apprenticeship at the sharp end that tightened her musical chops, polished her stagecraft and gave her the grit to overcome occasional scepticism about her age, hair tone and gender. "I always hated the idea of the gimmick," she told Premier Guitar. "People come out just because you are a girl, but then you have so much more to prove once you get them in the door."

But Samantha got them in -- and kept them in -- and after an early live recording from Knuckleheads found its way into the hands of label supremo Thomas Ruf, the young bandleader's trajectory was changed from dreamer to signed artist. Fish's first appointment for the label was to join Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde on the 2011 Girls With Guitars album: a whip-cracking three-female release that the trio doused with added rocket fuel on Ruf's famous Blues Caravan tour of Europe and the US that year. "I don't get that whole competitive thing, especially when I play with the girls," insisted Samantha. "When you start trying to get over the top of somebody, you lose what makes it great. That's when you lose the musical aspect of it."

With her name buzzing on the blues scene and the iron hot, Samantha struck again that same year with Runaway, her solo debut on Ruf. With ten hot tracks -- of which nine were originals -- and production once again from Zito, this was a debut album that announced the depth of this newcomer's talent, mixing up gutsy riff-blues rockers like Down In The Swamp with the mellow small-hours jazz of Feelin' Alright, while marinating her songwriting in the groove of the Rolling Stones and even tipping a hat to Heart. "It's all the sounds I grew up with," she explained, "with my own spin."

Description:

The very title The Front Porch Sessions suggests what Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band deliver on their sixth album: stripped-down, simple, down-home blues. Reverend Peyton began using the term "Front Porch Sessions" back in 2014, when he started posting live clips recorded on his front porch onto the internet, but this 2017 album was indeed cut in a studio: Farm Fresh in his native Indiana. It may have been made in a professional studio, but The Front Porch Sessions delivers on the intimacy and immediacy of its title, while also sounding very, very big. Almost of this lies on Reverend Peyton himself, who has a muscular howl that tends to overshadow the other two members of his big band, but that's by design. The Big Band deliver a big sound by focusing on a down-and-gritty groove, a boogie that naturally comes to the forefront on the handful of instrumentals, but is also felt when Peyton is bellowing his lungs out. This palpable sense of soul, combined with a strong set of songs -- there are a handful of standards, including Furry Lewis' "When My Baby Left Me," along with solid originals -- elevates The Front Porch Sessions to the very top rank of the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band albums. - AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Description:

In the tight-knit musical community of Austin, Texas, it's tough to get away with posturing. You either bring it, or you don't. If you do, word gets around. Praises are sung. And one day, you find yourself performing a duet with Bonnie Raitt in a documentary, or standing onstage with the Allman Brothers at New York's Beacon Theater, trading verses with Susan Tedeschi. You might even wind up getting nominated for a Best Blues Album Grammy three times in a row. In addition to your six Female Artist of the Year/ Koko Taylor Blues Music Awards. For ''Joy Comes Back,'' Foster wasn't merely singing about love and loss; she was splitting a household and custody of her 5-year-old daughter. Music was her therapy. In the warm confines of Austin producer and former neighbor Daniel Barrett's home studio, she found a comfort level she'd never before experienced while recording. It gave her the strength to pour the pain of her family's fracture and the cautious hope of new love into 10 incredible tracks, nine of which are by a diverse array of writers from Mississippi John Hurt, Sean Staples and Grace Pettis, daughter of renowned folk singer Pierce Pettis, to Chris Stapleton and Black Sabbath. Yes, Black Sabbath; Foster re-imagines ''War Pigs'' as a jam session with Son House. She also covers the Four Tops' ''Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever,'' written by Ivy Jo Hunter and Stevie Wonder.

Written by Boston folkie Sean Staples with some lyrical tweaks from Foster, [the title track] ''Joy Comes Back'' rumbles along with the kind of deep-roots gospel tenor that makes it sound as if it's been buoying up hearts for generations. The lyrics--''I want to be ready when joy comes back to me'' --are, after all, sort of the essence of faith and what faith is for: the acknowledgement of hardship and weariness, with true resolve that relief is coming. The rhythm rolls steadfastly forward, a slow trek toward a sure destination, with [Derek] Trucks' guitar soaring above. The question isn't if the joy is coming back, but when. ''That has a lot to do with how I grew up,'' Foster says. ''Not necessarily in the religious sense, but just knowing that things will turn. 'Joy Comes Back' was a song I connected to because I know things get better with time. You put your intentions out there and stand your ground, and know that good times and joy are on the way.'' --NPR, Songs We Love, 2/13/17

If we can go ahead and name the year's best album, it's clearly Ruthie Foster's ''Joy Comes Back.'' The album title cuts many ways, of course: she's glad to be back after some personal struggles over the three years since her last album; it's a joy to have her back ruling the roost with her down-to-the-bone soul songs; and she's discovered the joy she thought she'd lost and she celebrates joyfully with us on the new album. You can feel her defiance, her standing-in-the-face of despair, and her exultant rejoicing in every note of every song on ''Joy Comes Back,'' and by the end of the album we've also been drained and revived, but we're laughing and embracing the bright port we find even in sailing life's dark waters. Foster recorded the album at her former neighbor Dan Barrett's studio, and between the two of them, they chose ten songs that touched Foster and expressed both the depth of her wounds and the bottomlessness of her healing, as well as the hopefulness of a newly discovered love. Joining Foster on the album are Barrett on guitar and percussion, Joe Vitale on drums, Willie Weeks on bass, Derek Trucks (who plays slide on the title track), Grace Pettis on guitar on ''Good Sailor,'' .... Foster wrote only one song on ''Joy Comes Back''--''Open Sky''--but the other nine she and Barrett selected for the album range from Black Sabbath's ''War Pigs'' and Chris Stapleton's ''What Are You Listening To?'' to Ivy Jo Hunter and Stevie Wonder's ''Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever'' and Shawnee Kilgore's ''Abraham.'' As you'd expect from Foster, she finds the vulnerability, the power, the humor, the courage, the joy, and the love in every song and delivers them with her just-right phrasing and canny ability to make the song her own. Maybe the most unexpected song on the album is Black Sabbath's ''War Pigs,'' but this may also be the most fun you ever have singing or listening to the 70s anti-war anthem that's been recorded already by artists as various as Cake, Gov't Mule, and Rockabye Baby! Lullaby. Black Sabbath's original plods along, urging defiance with an angry, though often addled, tone; it's as if they could urge resistance simply by yelling angrily. Foster straps on her resonator guitar and howls resistance in a blues jam that features a call and response among her vocals, Simon Wallace's harmonica, and Foster's guitar. It's dark and forceful, with a wink-and-a-nod playfulness in the music itself, laying bare the gleefulness of judgment on the ''war pigs'' in the final verses. On the title track, written by Sean Staples, Foster returns to her gospel roots. The song opens with Red Young's jaunty church piano that's augmented quickly by Trucks' slide guitar. From those opening bars on, the spirit moves us along as Foster declares that she wants to ''be ready/when joy comes back again.'' Built on a blues structure, the power of the song builds from its repetition, its gospel shouts, and the call-and-response of the instruments as Trucks slide guitar answers Young's Hammond organ on the bridge. Foster adds a verse to the song where she joyously proclaims that she's risen again: ''Spirit get low, Lord/Spirit get low, sometime/Spirit get low, Lord/But I'm gonna rise again.'' By the end of the song, she's preaching deliverance and proclaiming in true Sunday fashion as she fills the air with gospel shouts ''whoa, I'm gonna rise again/here comes my joy.'' Foster's joyfulness is palpable as she celebrates the movement from the humility of despair to the bliss and rapture of pure joy. You can't listen to this album and be unmoved by Foster's pure musical genius and her way of singing these songs with such power and grace that they touch and change our hearts. Joy, indeed. --No Depression, Henry Carrigan, 3/22, 2017

Description:

Middle of the Road is Eric Gales fourth album on Provogue/Mascot label Group (Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart, Black Stone Cherry, Warren Haynes, The Robert Cray Band, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band) after Transformation (2011), Relentless (2010) and The Psychedelic Underground (2007) and it sees him at his most expressive yet; it is a deeply personal and reflective record that echoes where he is in his life right now and he opens himself up and allows himself the chance to really flourish. Middle of the Road is the running theme throughout the record. "It's about being fully focused and centered in the middle of the road. If you're on the wrong side and in the gravel you're not too good and if you're on the median strip that's not too good either, so being in the middle of the road is the best place to be", according to Eric. Title: Folk Singer
Genre: Blues
Release Date: 1964/2013
Label: Geffen Records

There are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters' Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the first and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Now, Folk Singer, which includes fellow blues greats Buddy Guy and Willie Dixon backing up Waters, is being re-released in an expanded version that features two bonus tracks recorded during the two 1964 sessions that followed those for the album -- "The Same Thing" and "You Can't Lose What You Never Had". Muddy Waters was the king of electric Chicago blues, but on Folk Singer he proved to be, simply, one of the greats of 20th century music.

Muddy's "unplugged" album was cut in September of 1963 and still sounds fresh and vital today. It was Muddy simply returning to his original style on a plain acoustic guitar in a well-tuned room with Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on second acoustic guitar. The nine tracks are divvied up between full rhythm section treatments with Buddy and Muddy as a duo and the final track, "Feel Like Going Home," which Waters approaches solo. What makes this version of the album a worthwhile buy is the inclusion of five bonus tracks from his next two sessions: An April 1964 session brings us Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing" and Muddy's "You Can't Lose What You Never Had," while the October 1964 session features J.T. Brown on sax and clarinet on "Short Dress Woman" and "My John the Conqueror Root," as well as "Put Me in Your Lay Away," another strong side. Folk Singer offers both sides of Muddy from the early '60s.

Doug MacLeod – Exactly Like This (2015) [Blues, HDTracks, FLAC 176.4kHz/24bit]

Artist: Doug MacLeod
Title: Exactly Like This
Genre: Blues
Release Date: 2015
Label: Reference Recordings
Duration: 55:40
Quality: FLAC 176.4kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks

Doug MacLeod is a unique, powerful guitarist with a rich and soulful voice, singing original songs based on his own life and experiences. His new album Exactly Like This is his third release withReference Recordings. This is 'Genuine Original Acoustic Music' at its very best, in a richly detailed recording by Grammy-winning engineer Keith Johnson, made at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA. Doug MacLeod isn't just a blues guy, he's a singer/songwriter/storyteller and serious guitarist. He is one of the few modern artists doing all original material and traveling the country like a troubadour.

Doug Macleod is surrounded by the blues context. In his youth, he was able to overcome stuttering and abuse to become a staple in the blues community. With a powerful singing voice and rhythmic guitar technique, he played with George 'Harmonica' Smith, Big Joe Turner, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vincent, Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton. His career as an individual artist was propelled by a talent for songwriting. Two of his songs are covered by Albert King and Albert Collins. For three decades, he has recorded several live and studio recordings. In 2012, he signed with audiophile label Reference Recordings. In 2014, he was voted the winner of Blues Music Awards Acoustic Artist Of The Year. His There's A Time release was voted Acoustic Album Of The Year. Macleod is involved in many diverse projects. His latest album is out!

Exactly Like This opens with a lively surprise. "Rock It Till The Cows Come Home" is pure boogie-woogie heaven. Accompanying Macleod's tough vocals is Mike Thompson rollicking piano. The ebullient composition (one of eleven originals) utilizes up-tempo rhythm patterns (Jimi Bott/drums and Denny Croy /double bass) in channeling the likes of Louis Jordan. But it's authentic roots. On "Too Many Misses For Me" (a hysterical word play on romance), Macleod's jazzy, instrumental style was inspired (as described in the liner notes) by Wes Montgomery. But there is an underlying blues pulse that inhabits the songs and complements the soulful vocals. Acoustic blues artists are connected to the music of the Delta. The slide guitar passages on "Find Your Right Mind" are evocative like Robert Johnson or Elmore James. The relaxed pace underscores the eternal quest for hope. Macleod reminisces about his early career with an infectious, rambling country "train" song ("Ain't It Rough?"). Inspired by the inimitable Jerry Reed, Macleod gets a call and response from Bott and Croy). It is notable that Johnny Cash recorded a similar type of song in 1969 at Folsom Prison called "A Boy Named Sue" (written by Shel Silverstein).

Nasty grooves infuse "Vanetta", and Macleod is generous in his advocacy for John Lee Hooker. Macleod's guitar runs are head-shaking and hypnotic. His vocals are soulful and balance the instrumentals. Pushing southward, "Serious Doin' Woman" is a swampy vamp. This style of music influenced by Tony Joe White became a minor template for groups like Credence Clearwater Revival in the 1960's. Shifting to Blue Ridge aesthetics, "Ridge Runner" is the only instrumental on the album. Straightforward and rootsy (washboard accompaniment (Botti) and upright bass solo (Croy)), the song has a toe-tapping backporch feel. Blues players have more than their share of anecdotal female disasters. "Raylene is one of those stories (..."The meanest Southern woman I seen...").It is enveloped by great slide runs and woeful vocals. In many ways, Macleod is a classic troubadour. The heartfelt rumination, "Heaven's The Only Place" just guitar and voice and has some interesting phrasing. The finale ("You Got It Good/ And That Ain't Bad") is an upbeat reversal (both rhythm and content) of the similarly titled Duke Ellington lament. The arrangement reunites the quartet (with some nimble soloing from Thompson).

The material on "Exactly Like This" is very good. The recording environment by Reference Recordings is superlative. The live studio intimacy is enhanced significantly by the full sound of the 24-bit HDCD. The guitar resonates with natural vibration and echo. McLeod's baritone reverberates with subtle prominence. Engineer Keith O. "Prof" Johnson" captures the essence of spontaneous, bona fide blues. The recording was done live without headphones, over-dubs, pitch, or tempo adjustments. The liner notes are incisive and reveal Macleod's thoughts on why he recorded this particular album this way. There is even an explanation about the squeaks from the stool. Blues lovers (and just plain music lovers) will be pleased with this effort! --Robbie Gerson, Audiophile Audition
