JOE BONAMASSA: BEACON THEATRE LIVE FROM NEW YORK rips through 20 songs
spanning Bonamassa s career with smoky vocals complementing the guitar
wizardry and rapid-fingered ease with which his fans know and love.
Alongside the great chemistry he shares with his formidable bandmates
Carmine Rojas (bass), Tal Bergman (drums) and Rick Melick (keyboards), the
performance is mesmerizing to watch. He kicks it off with Slow Train, from
2011s solo album Dust Bowl and rolls through a number of fan-favorites
including: Cradle Song, Dust Bowl, When The Fire Hits The Sea, Bird On A
Wire, Blue & Evil, Mountain Time, and many more. Hart joins Bonamassa on
stage for soulful duets on Ill Take Care of You and Sinners Prayer, which
is featured on the recently released Dont Explain an album of soul covers
Hart recorded with Bonamassa. Hiatt, a Nashville Music Lifetime Achievement
Award recipient and American Music Award (AMA) winner, joined Bonamassa for
a rendition of Down Around My Place and I Know A Place. And as legendary
classic rock singer Paul Rodgers (Bad Company, Free) came on stage, the
crowd jumped to its feet as he and Bonamassa performed Frees Fire And Water
and Walk In My Shadows.

Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, The Village Recorder in
Los Angeles, CA and The Cave in Malibu, CA, Driving Towards The Daylight is
a balanced back-to-basics album that highlights Bonamassa s signature style
of roots blues with rock-and-roll guts, while honoring the traditions of the
original blues musicians. We ve taken some really traditional old blues
songs the Howlin Wolf song Who s Been Talkin ? and the Robert Johnson song
Stones In My Passway, and we ve tried to imagine how they would do them in a
rock context, said Shirley. It s a very exciting return to the blues in a
very visceral way. It s vibrant and it s gutsy and it s really, really
rugged.

To challenge Joe and move him out of his comfort zone, a unique group of
musicians was gathered including Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford (guitar),
Blondie Chaplan (guitar), Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum
(keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bass), Carmine Rojas (bass), Jeff Bova and The
Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (guitar), and Brad s son Harrison Whitford
(guitar).

The album features five Bonamassa-penned originals including the bruising
opener Dislocated Boy, the road warrior title track (and first single)
Driving Towards The Daylight, I Got All You Need, Heavenly Soul, and
Somewhere Trouble Don t Go. Other tracks include Bonamassa s versions of Tom
Waits New Coat Of Paint, Lonely Town Lonely Street, by Bill Withers (Lean On
Me, Ain t No Sunshine) and A Place In My Heart by Bernie Marsden of White
Snake (Here I Go Again). On the album closer, Australian rock singer Jimmy
Barnes sings lead vocals on his 1987 hit “Too Much Aint Enough Love.”

Voted by Guitar Player readers as 2007s Best Blues Guitarist, blues-rock
guitar virtuoso, vocalist, and songwriter JOE BONAMASSA is set to release
his seventh solo album, SLOE GIN, on August 21, 2007. Bonamassas fourth
release, the disc re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Satriani,
Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Leppelin), who produced 2006s YOU & ME, which
debuted at #1 on Billboards Blues Chart in June of last year.

SLOE GIN effortlessly ranges through heavy blues and acoustic numbers alike,
a textured flow that Bonamassa says was in part inspired by Rod Stewarts
legendary 1969 debut solo LP. In the liner notes, Joe adds, “I sequenced the
album as a throwback to the side A/side B set-up of vinyl
records…listening to an album as a whole is a lost pastime. i wanted to
bring that experience back around.

Renowned for this fluid phrasing and post-modern fusion of traditional roots
blues with rock and roll guts, Bonamassa began playing guitar at age four,
and toured with blues icon B.B. King when he was twelve. Recently, Joe was
named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Magazines 2007 Readers Choice Awards.
He is also the youngest member of the Memphis, TN-based Blues Foundations
Board of Directors, and a spokesperson for their respected Blues in the
Schools Program.

The boastful title is no exaggeration; this is a welcome return for the
classic Chicago blues sideman, who, primarily because of the misfortune of
his music being exploited by other musicians, took a self-imposed
retirement for nearly 30 years. Its especially rewarding since Williams –
whose work you hear on early Howlin Wolf, Otis Spann, Bo Diddley, Billy
Boy Arnold (who guests here) sides — hadnt played a lick during that
time, keeping his guitar stashed under his bed. He sounds like he never put
the instrument away on this album, the first cohesive disc under his own
name ever. Aided by comparative youngsters Tinsley Ellis, Ronnie Baker
Brooks, and Rusty Zinn, along with a 21-year-old Sean Costello, Williams
holds the spotlight like the pro his is. Though well into his sixties when
this was recorded in 2001, he sounds remarkably vibrant, completely
confident, and totally in his element. Whether reprising past glories like
the magnificent instrumental “Moanin for Molasses” along with Costello
(who had revived the tune as the title track to his third release) or
“Lucky Lou,” which most blues fans will immediately recognize as the
opening to Otis Rushs “All Your Love” (but was nicked from Williams), or
writing new originals like the slow blues of “She Found a Fool and Bumped
His Head,” the guitarist sounds like hes thrilled to be recording again.
That enthusiasm infects the band and pervades this album with a glow all
too seldom felt when bluesmen attempt comebacks, especially after laying
low as long as Williams has. Between his clean, jazzy yet direct blues
style, the remarkably sympathetic band, and wonderfully understated
production from Dick Shurman (the man heavily credited with enticing
Williams back from obscurity), there are no missteps on this return. Its a
tasteful showcase for one of the blues lesser-known yet classic stars, and
will hopefully be the beginning of a new lease on life for Jody Williams.

Whats a Bootleg Tonic?
Bootleg Tonic is a hot new band with a really tasty sound. A
Bootleg Tonic cannot be made without its two main ingredients
Georgiana Trent and Eran Taviv. The first Bootleg Tonic record
showcases the band, their stories, and their bluesy-soulful
sound.

Although Georgiana and Eran are from opposite sides of the world
(Texas USA, and Tel Aviv, Israel), their chemistry began when
they got in a room a few years ago and found that together they
had a “sound.” They then decided to take that sound and bottle it
up, by writing and producing their debut album VOLUME I.
The album also has an added twist of flavor with guest friends
like the amazing B-3 organ player Ivan Neville (Rolling Stones,
The Neville Brothers), and drummer Jerry Krenach (Lou Reed, Chris
Whitley).
“We wanted to make an album that you put on and just play from
beginning to end,” says Eran, and Georgiana adds, “Every song has
come from real experiences, and we just hope you can feel it.”

Producer and GRP Records president Tommy LiPuma, a longtime
associate of Dr. Johns, revived his old Blue Thumb label as an
imprint of GRP/MCA with this album, which served as something of
a sequel to the last Dr. John/Tommy LiPuma collaboration, In a
Sentimental Mood. On that earlier album, the two had covered pop
standards. Here, they again turned to evergreens by the likes of
Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington. But if Sentimental Mood was
stylistically linked to the 20s and 30s, Afterglow was more a
recreation of the late 40s and early 50s, with its big-band
arrangements and the inclusion of jump blues numbers like Louis
Jordans “I Know What Ive Got.” Such songs allowed Dr. John
plenty of room to play his trademark New Orleans piano solos,
and, in the second half of the record, some of the Doctors own
compositions were snuck in among the classics without disturbing
the mood. Of course, the dominant sound remained Dr. Johns
gravel-and-honey voice, an even more appropriate instrument for
these bluesier standards than it was for the Sentimental ones.

Dr. John has spent so much time turning out perfectly enjoyable
but interchangeable records that it may be easy to forget the
spooky voodoo vibes of his earliest, arguably best, records. He
may have forgotten it himself, too, but there was a whole
generation of British musicians, from Modfather Paul Weller to
Spaceman Jason Pierce to the teenaged punks in Supergrass, who
remembered the haunted vibe lurking in Gumbo and Gris-Gris.
Citing his name in interviews, covering his songs, and enlisting
him as a session musician (Mr. Rebennack played on
Spiritualizeds acclaimed 1997 album, Ladies and Gentlemen, We
Are Floating in Space), they created a buzz around Dr. John and
were more than willing to play on Anutha Zone, hopefully
generating some sales for him in return. As should be expected
from any project that is a marketers dream, the collaborations
occasionally seem awkward, but what is surprising is how often it
works. Pierce helps Rebennack conjure the psychedelic R&B of his
earlier albums, while Weller and Supergrass help keep things
cooking; furthermore, members of Primal Scream and Portishead
help make “Sweet Home New Orleans” a titanic workout. The Brits
arent as funky as the classic New Orleans musicians, but they
are willing to push Dr. John into his best work in years. Anutha
Zone isnt a perfect album by any means, but its Rebennacks
most ambitious and rewarding album in many a year.

NAwlinz: Dis Dat or dUdda is a very good record, but it could
have been a great one. One has to wonder if the idea of having
all these high-profile guest vocalists was Dr. Johns, Blue
Notes, or producer Stewart Levines, in order to follow the 21st
century trendiness of having “celebrity” guests on a session.
This is Mac Rebennacks homeboy album, a tribute to his city and
its players. Hes recorded some in New Orleans, to be sure, but
never has he been able to make use of the Crescent Citys
greatest arranger, Wardell Quezergue, to such an extent. In
addition, the great Doctor was able to enlist Earl Palmer, Smokey
Johnson, Nicholas Payton, Dave Bartholemew, Eddie Bo, Walter
Wolfman Washington, Snooks Eaglin, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band,
Alfred “Uganda” Roberts, Willie Tee, and a huge slew of players
to help him out on canonical N.O. repertoire. The sheer number of
percussionists on this set is staggering and welcome. On nuggets
like “When the Saints Go Marching In,” sung funeral style, the
Davell Crawford Singers and the Quezergue horns kick it with the
rhythm section and front line. “St. James Infirmary” has Bo
second-lining the band as he duets with Mac. The Cousin Joe
(Pleasant Joseph) tunes like “Lifes a One Way Ticket,”
Bartholomews “The Monkey,” and Macs own brilliant “Shango
Tango” smolder with that strutting, finger-poppin R&B. So whats
the problem? The lame, completely lifeless vocals of Randy
Newman, a track with B.B. King and Willie Nelson, and Nelson on
his own on three tracks that will remain nameless mar something
so beautifully done that it otherwise might have been one of the
finest New Orleans records since the early 60s. There are other
guest vocalists who bring home the bacon on duets with Dr. John
— Mavis Staples on “Lay My Burden Down,” Cyril Neville on the
amazing read of Robert Gurleys “Marie Laveau,” and Rebbenacks
closer, “Im Goin” Home,” are stellar. And King even rises to the
occasion on his duet with Mac on “Hen Layin Rooster.” Dr. John
is in amazing voice here, his piano playing is knife-edge tough
and funky, and his performances are so inspired that they are
perhaps career-defining. Three out of 18 cuts is minuscule after
all, and the rest of this set is so badass that it should be
purchased regardless. After all, what is the remote control for?
Its a contender to be sure, but it could have been a champion.

British-born but raised in Australia since the age of ten, blues
vocalist and harmonica wizard Peter D. Harper has been regarded
as one of the very best on his instrument, slashing and dashing
across American bar and festival dates in the decade of the 2000s
while based in metro Detroit. His soulful voice is much more
refined than raw, charming in many ways but still tough as nails,
and sounds much more like a true singer of songs relating to the
mean streets of the big city and being on the road. Simply Harper
(as he is known professionally) plays the didgeridoo on many of
these tracks, and though one might think that wouldnt work, it
does, in tandem with his singing or his biting, strong, harmonica
playing. Hes also come into his own as a songwriter on this, his
fourth album overall and third for the Blind Pig label. Closer to
rock than purist or even contemporary blues, songs like “I Never
Want” or “We Stand Together” also have a personal, uniting vibe,
while “You Know What You Got” is as honest and real as it gets.
In the blues vein, Harper can jam and get down as evidenced by
“No Problem,” as he is strapped in with electric guitarist Gregg
Leonard on a deeper blues, while theres much overdubbing on the
cautionary tale “Weaker Man,” a compelling tune with hit
potential. Harper does tap on New Orleans voodoo shuffle la
Charlie Musselwhite, organ combo sounds via the fine keyboardist
Kurt Wolak, some lighter pop-oriented songs, and a waltz ballad
where Wolak plays piano. The first half of this CD is predictable
on every other track, but gets broader as it goes on, assuring
you that Harper is far from finished in creating a lasting,
original effort somewhere down the road. For now this is just
fine.

The duo of Tim Ratcliff and Ken Bailey, artistically known as
Ratcliff Bailey, has released their second album titled, Deuce.
The prolific songwriters (190 original recorded songs) wrote all
of the songs found on the release with the exception of the
lyrics found on track-6.

The guys say that when they are writing songs they have only two
rules that they follow, we write what we feel, and we try to do
it in a quality way. The guys also have the added advantage of
operating a 24-track studio in Ironton, Ohio where they recorded
Deuce.

The guys credit bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Tom
Petty, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Lynyrd Skynyrd for the rock
side of their music and legendary blues artist, John Lee Hooker
and Howlin Wolf for the blues side.

The duo plays a blend of rock and blues music thats lead by its
guitar parts. The release kicks off in a big way with, The
Disguise, an upbeat rocking track filled with hot guitars and
steady driving drum beats.

The rocking continues for the next several tracks with both
up-tempo and more medium-tempo songs until track-6 when the
season appropriate song, All I Got for Christmas was the Blues,
get the blues portion of the release rolling. That song along
with, Oh What a Shame, and Fakers and Takers brings the
wailing blues guitars out in full force.

The last two songs that wrap up the album, Everybodys Lookin,
and Hey Boots, are two songs that crank up the rock knob again
with their full-on rocking guitar and driving drum beats.

If you like your music with a mixture of bar & southern rock,
mixed with some blues, with just a pinch of pop added in, then
Ratcliff Baileys music is just what youre wanting to hear.

“Yeah, its been a long time coming, never thought itd take so
long,” moans Jonny Lang on the seemingly autobiographical title
track to his first release in five years. But its stark acoustic,
near demo quality is in contrast to the preceding 12 songs, which
are buffed to an arena-rock sheen. The youngster has shifted from
an up-and-coming bluesman into a tough, journeyman melodic rocker
with a dab of R&B. He has also honed his songwriting skills,
resulting in the majority of this album (except a rugged bonus
live cover of Stevie Wonders “Livin for the City” and the first
single “Red Light”) being self-penned. Aiming for the back rows,
Long Time Coming boasts booming, sing-along mid-tempo choruses in
“Save Yourself” and “Goodbye Letter,” perfect for the
lighter-waving crowd. He has also transformed into a soulman of
sorts, evidenced by the Prince/ Michael McDonald influences on
“Touch,” “Beautiful One,” “The One I Got,” and the funky “If We

Its hard to believe this album wasnt made a long time ago,
actually, since blues pianist Pinetop Perkins and drummer and
harmonica player Willie “Big Eyes” Smith have worked together
frequently in the past 40 some years. Perkins replaced the
legendary pianist Otis Spann in Muddy Waters band in 1969 when
Smith was the drummer in the ensemble, and later Perkins and
Smith formed the Legendary Blues Band in the 1980s. Perkins was
96 years old when the sessions for Joined at the Hip were
recorded, but one wouldnt know it, and Smith, now out from
behind the drum kit (his son, Kenny Smith, plays drums here),
concentrates on his harp blowing and handles most of the vocals.
The result is a solid Chicago blues record, one that feels like
it could have been tracked anytime in the past four decades. The
sound is big and warm and alive, and this is the Chicago blues
without any annoying and unnecessary flash — it just socks home
where its supposed to, with solid ensemble playing (Bob Stroger
is on bass and John Primer and “Little Frank” Krakowski handle
the guitars while Perkins, of course, mans the piano and Smith
adds appropriate harmonica fills, with Kenny Smith on drums).
Highlights include the opener, Grown Up to Be a Man, a fine
version of Sonny Boy Williamsons Eyesight to the Blind (the
second Sonny Boy — Eyesight was his first single back in
1951), and a compelling I Would Like to Have a Girl Like You,
which was written by Billy Flynn, who was also a member of the
Legendary Blues Band with Perkins and Smith. Produced by Michael
Freeman, Joined at the Hip is Chicago blues played straight and
true, headed up by a couple of veteran blues musicians who not
only know what theyre talking about, theyve also lived it.
